Buffalo County 5th & 6th Grade Prevention Day On January 28 all fifth and sixth graders in Buffalo County participated in the annual Buffalo County Partnership Council 5th and 6th Grade Prevention Day. Fifth and sixth graders from all four school districts of Cochrane-Fountain City, Alma, Mondovi and Gilmanton engaged in the virtual event from their classrooms. The program was hosted by the Buffalo County Partnership Council (BCPC), a group of teachers, students, county agencies, and community organizations with the mission to “provide collaborative prevention programming to educate youth and their families to make healthy choices and positively influence people and policies.” The day of prevention included two key presenters focused on preparing young people to start their middle school experience on the right foot. Energizer Carl Olson utilized a mix of motivation and magic to encourage young people to think critically about thinking outside of the box, decision-making, character, showing gratitude to others and strategies for success in their next years before graduation. In his closing, he reminded students, “Good, Better, Best; Never Let it Rest!” His presentation engaged students with his inspiring anecdotes and magic tricks. Fifth and Sixth Grade Day also featured a presentation from Buffalo County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Nic Scholl and his drug enforcement dog, Owen. Deputy Scholl used body cam video to show students how Owen sniffs out illegal substances including meth, marijuana, heroin and cocaine. Deputy Scholl shared with students Owen’s purpose and spoke with students about how he assists in solving drug-related crimes in Buffalo County. Fifth and sixth graders had many questions of Deputy Scholl and were eager to learn more about how Owen stays healthy and stays up to date on his training. Thanks Mrs. Rieck, Mrs. Lisowski and all others who made this experience possible!

The first grade class is studying how life was different long ago this week during Language Arts and Social Studies. Mrs. Steinke brought in 12 items used long ago and the first graders had fun trying to figure out what they were! Some were easy, like the camera and ice cream maker. Others were more difficult...the cotton candy maker was really a bedpan! Ewwwww! And the toaster? It’s not a lantern? How does that work? We had a lot of fun and even saw an old toy horse that was 60 years old! It belonged to Mrs. Steinke when she was a little girl!

Mrs. Dierauer, Alma School art instructor, brightens our hallways continuously with visual art projects. Some student groups may be developing fine motor skills. Others may be experimenting with an art medium. Overall, the students work hard on the products, and, as viewers, everyone in the Alma School hallway gets to enjoy the creativity.
Three new faces joined the faculty and students at Alma Elementary School on January 11th. The Winona State students have begun a student teaching semester. Ms. Boland is in Mrs. Glander’s classroom, Ms. Lerass is in Mrs. Goeldner’s class room, and Mr. Arend is in Mrs. Brecka’s. Each aspiring teacher will introduce him/herself in our January newsletter. "Every child deserves a champion—an adult who will never give up on them, who understands the power of connection and insists that they become the best that they can possibly be." Thank you to these new leaders who will design learning experiences for our students. We welcome you to our team!
Mrs. Rollbiecki shares from the B-4 classroom: "Second semester will bring many new adventures in the B4 classroom. We are "Operation Prepare for Kindergarten," and the students are here for it! Learning in the computer lab is an exciting time for these littles, and they are doing amazing! This week we are working on counting objects to 3. Who knows what next week will bring? Maybe we will start Physics!"
Mrs. Steinke's 1st grade class has been following sailing journey on the Mississippi River. Alex and Sam operate the 404 Coffee Shop in Pepin, Wisconsin in the summer. The couple embarked on a nearly 3,000 mile journey from Pepin, WI, to Key Largo, FL. “We’re leaving from the Lake Pepin Marina, and we’ll take the upper Mississippi 767 miles from here to the Ohio River, and then the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway, which is about another 300 miles, and then that dumps into the Mobile Bay to the Gulf of Mexico, then to South Florida,” De La Pena said. The 1st graders connect through a live stream to ask the couple questions about the experience. Alex and Sam quickly and happily reply to the curious students. You can find more about the couple's adventure at Sailing Rhapsody on Facebook and You Tube.

T's for 3's is a little different this year. Normally at each home game you would have seen t-shirts thrown into the stands after each 3 point basket. This year after each home basketball game the coach will let the Alma and Pepin Schools know how many 3 point baskets were made and then each school will give out the T's for 3's shirts at school. At Alma we hold a random drawing for students. Pictured are the winners from todays drawings.

DAIRYLAND CONFERENCE COVID-19 SPORTS ANNOUNCMENT The eleven schools of the Dairyland Conference are pleased to be sponsoring sports for our student/athletes again this fall 2020. Due to the pandemic, we are limiting attendance to 4 tickets per athlete at our events to help keep everyone safe, on the field, court, course and in the classroom. Masks are required by everyone. No casual fans allowed. We understand these events are an important piece of the community for many of us. By limiting exposure, we are hoping that we can extend sports seasons through the fall and continue to offer these opportunities to our students throughout the year. With your cooperation, we will be able to provide these important experiences for our student-athletes and will welcome the public to attend sports events again when it is deemed safe. Until then, please show your support by following our athletes through the radio, internet live streams (these links will be provided for each even as soon as available) and print media.

Below you will find a link to a 2 question survey that we are asking all parents to complete. Please complete one survey for each school-aged child. Although this survey is short, it will provide us with a lot of beneficial information as we gear up for the start of the 2020-21 school year. I have also embedded a video into the survey that will explain the survey and provide parents with some additional information. If you have any questions after watching the video, or when completing the survey, please do not hesitate to contact me. Reopening Plan Link: https://5il.co/ipz7 Above you will find a link to the Alma School District’s initial reopening plan. As you read through our current ideas for reopening school, please keep in mind two important realities: 1) Any plan can change literally overnight. We are constantly paying very close attention to the positive COVID-19 cases in our county and the age group that is being affected. We may be comfortable with having students in our building on a Monday, and on Tuesday we may feel we need to close a classroom, or part of the building for a short period of time to wait for test results or to provide for additional cleaning. As a result, we need you to continue to be flexible and to have a Plan B. What will you do if your child’s classroom is asked to quarantine for 14 days or if a part of school has to be closed for that same time frame? 2)We cannot stop the spread of COVID-19. The best the Alma School District can do is mitigate the risk of exposure in the school setting. Our plans are developed based on the idea that we can mitigate, not eliminate, exposure to the Coronavirus. You, as a parent, need to decide if you are comfortable sending your child to school based on the safety parameters we are establishing. While the recommendations made by the Centers for Disease Control, the Wisconsin Department of Health, our local county health departments, and the Department of Public Instruction need to be considered and taken into account, we may not always be able to meet those recommendations. We must find a path which allows us to balance safety concerns with the desire of our community and parents to have students in school. We hope that you will find that this comprehensive initial reopening plan makes every effort to do just that. A lot of work has gone into the development of this plan. Likewise, a great deal of time and energy has gone into many other educational and risk mitigating strategies, such as district wide scheduling, transportation protocols, personal protective equipment upgrades, building wide sanitation, disinfection and ventilation, technology additions for students and staff to name just a few. We are committed to continue this work and provide all of our students and families with options that work for them. We are also providing our staff with additional professional development in order to support distance learning for students and families who are uncomfortable attending in-person at this time, or for those situations where self-quarantine is necessary. Lastly, please understand that the Alma School District is required to account for the enrollment of every child in our school district. We hope that we have offered a plan that meets the needs of all of our families. As always, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to our administration. Thanks and make it a great day! Robert J. Stewart District Administrator School District of Alma
