The Lady Eagles and Lady Norse wore their ALS shirts in support of Carl Duley and his family

In the world of sports, the spirit of competition often exceeds the boundaries of the game itself. Volleyball is no exception, and the Alma Pepin Eagles volleyball team took their passion for the sport to a new level by supporting the cause of ALS. In a recent match against the Whitehall Norse, the Eagles showcased their volleyball skills and commitment to raising awareness.

The idea of “Aces for ALS” is an inspiring twist on the traditional “Dig Pink” campaign often seen in volleyball events to support breast cancer awareness. This initiative was sparked two years ago by Carl Duley’s diagnosis of ALS. He was a cherished community member who once coached the Eagles volleyball team. Recently, Carl tragically passed away. In response, the team decided to make a difference not only on the court but also in the lives of those affected by this debilitating disease.

The event featured numerous approaches to not only raising funds but also awareness of ALS. ALS support shirts were worn by both teams along with the passionate crowd. The silent auction had an impressive turnout with members throughout the school and community donating to the cause. The 50/50 raffle was also a remarkable success as it raised close to $1,000 to make the school district more accessible to those in wheelchairs.

Not only was it ALS night, it was also senior night for the Eagles. With all these events occuring, Alma-Pepin knew they had a lot to be playing for. Whitehall came out knowing that they had to give everything they had for a tough Eagles team. The Norse came out strong, winning the first set 25-22. Alma-Pepin had a little bit of waking up to do for the rest of the game if they wanted to come out on top. They shook off all their nerves and came out ready for the second set. The Eagles’ sophomore, Kennedy Carlson, dominated at the net with 13 kills helping them secure the second set 25-18. After their second set win, Alma-Pepin wanted to carry over the same energy into the third set. The Norse came out just as dynamic. Both the Eagles and the Norse had to fight for every point, and even went past the normal limit of 25. Alma-Pepin pulled away in the end, winning 27-25.  After a night full of all emotions, Alma-Pepin finished strong in the end winning 25-14 in the fourth match. Eagles’ seniors Cora Komisar and Wallice Helmen dominated in the back row, both recording double digits in digs.

Although all Eagle players are immensely sad about the passing of their prior head coach, they know that he will always be watching over them from the best seat in the house. The Alma Pepin Eagles’ initiative sends a powerful message of unity and community support. They have shown that sports can be more than just a competition; it can be a platform for change and a way to bring awareness to important causes.

In a world often divided by rivalries and competition, the Alma Pepin Eagles’ commitment to supporting ALS stands as a shining example of the positive influence that sports can have. The Alma Pepin Eagles are proving that they are not just skilled athletes, but compassionate community members who are willing to serve aces both on and off the court, making a meaningful impact on the world.
