Rick and LuAnn Flury recently stopped by to see the newly completed Alma Fab Lab (Fabrication Lab) in action. A Fab Lab is a hands-on, project-based learning space where students use both modern digital fabrication tools and traditional shop equipment to design, create, prototype, and test real-world projects.

This school year marks the debut of Alma’s brand-new Fab Lab. The project began with transforming two existing classrooms into one innovative workspace. That process included creating a large 10-foot opening between the rooms, installing a new floor, removing a wall, and updating wiring, ventilation, and paint.

While the renovation was underway, staff determined the initial equipment to best support student learning. The focus began with 3D modeling and printing, including five new 3D printers and an industrial vinyl printer. The lab also emphasizes precision measurement, adding an NC3-certified tool chest and curriculum that allow students to earn industry-recognized certifications.

To ensure students of all ages can engage in hands-on design, the Fab Lab also features cardboard cutting and building systems, including chomp saws, tools, and connection kits. The district’s existing laser engraver was relocated to the new space, and top-of-the-line mobile workstations complete the lab’s flexible and modern layout.

Rick and LuAnn Flury have long been exceptional supporters of the Alma School District, consistently providing financial assistance to enhance opportunities for both students and staff. When they learned about the Fab Lab initiative, they immediately asked how they could help. Recognizing the value of innovative, career-connected learning, the Flurry’s generously donated $10,000 to support the development of the new lab—funds that played a crucial role in securing key curriculum resources.

The Alma School District extends its deepest gratitude to Rick and LuAnn for their continued generosity and belief in the power of education. Their investment in our students is truly an investment in our future.

Thank you, Rick and LuAnn Flury, for helping make the Alma Fab Lab a reality. Our community, families, staff, and—most importantly—students are grateful for your unwavering support.
