On Tuesday, November 11, Alma hosted its annual Veterans Day program in honor of our local veterans, organized by Legion Post 224. The event began with the Auxiliary Color Guard presenting the colors. Tori Creighton led the Pledge of Allegiance to kick off the program, followed by a warm welcome from Scott Smolen. The Alma-Pepin choir performed “Thank You, Soldier” and “Brother, My Brother.”
Every year, student council members from Alma Area Schools assist in recognizing veterans who receive Quilts of Valor, a program dedicated to honoring veterans with handmade quilts made by a local quilting group. During the ceremony, Alma student council members read short biographies highlighting the service and contributions of each honored veteran.
Dave Juilet, a veteran and retired teacher from Wausau, Wisconsin, shared a meaningful story about the letter "B" highlighting the importance of “B” all you can be. The combined Alma-Pepin band paid tribute to the troops with the “Armed Forces Melody,” and they also performed “God Bless the USA.” Afterwards, Dan Shultz led a prayer of remembrance. The Legion's 224 firing squad performed a salute to the fallen, and Liam Midtovne and Breckin Hullopeter played taps to signify the close of the memorial portion of the event.
Following the taps, the Auxiliary retired the Colors, and the combined band concluded the program with the “Star Spangled Banner.” After the ceremony, the school hosted a brunch for all veterans and their families.
