A young child sits on a small green John Deere tractor during a community event, surrounded by several older children and teens. One person wears a camouflage hunting outfit, while another wears a black shirt with an EMS-related logo. They stand outdoors on a sunny day with trees and a residential street in the background.

As summer came to a close and the leaves shifted to warmer hues, Alma had begun preparing for the fall season by hosting its annual Community Fest on Sunday the 13th. With support from multiple organizations, Alma High School brought over 150 community members—both young and old—together for a multitude of activities, some familiar favorites and others brand new. Perfect autumn temperatures made rocket launching this year’s all-time favorite activity among children. Supervised by Dave Brevik, participants were offered the competitive liberty to compete against each other freely, operating in a contest of whose rocket could ascend the highest. Colorful tubes soaring hundreds of feet into the air was a sight that could be witnessed the full duration of the event. Even more color painted the event with a succulent pumpkin crafting station—brought to us by Sheila Huber—that allowed for participants to personalize their own unique verdant decor. Provided with a wide range of pumpkins, gourds, and various succulents, participants were able to select their plant base and use hot glue to attach one’s preferred succulent additions onto the uppermost section of the pumpkin. It is suggested for bulkier cuttings to be more centered, gradually spreading out. Smaller clippings are often used to fill in the gaps or to create a gradient effect. These plants make for flourishing decor in the home, at work, or even as a gift! Other activities included classic carnival games, cornhole, chomp saw making, bead bracelet building, the granny pants game, and much more! Along with the aforementioned entertainment, this year, the FFA contributed their first ever pedal pull competition. A hit among children, volunteer FFA members supervised and guided 4th to 5th grade-age children in driving miniature tractors that could pull up to 90 pounds! The community fest was a blast for all who attended, and its purpose of providing an entertaining, fun, and community building experience for all was fulfilled. We hope to extend a special thank you to all organizations and individuals who contributed their time and resources to making this event possible. Thank you to the Alma Rob and Gun Club for providing their space to host this function, Alma Area Schools for organizing it, and to all the following for aiding in its creation: FFA, Nelson and Alma EMS, the Happy Hub, Alma School staff, community relations committee, and Sheila Huber.
