Third grader Mallory Henthorn is this week's student of the week. Mallory was born on October 19 and is nine years old. She loves learning about math with her teacher Mrs. Baab. Mallory always enjoys it when the cook, Mary, makes donuts for breakfast and pepperoni pizza for lunch. Mallory lives at home with her parents, her older brother, Collin, and her yellow lab Remi. Outside of school, she loves playing basketball, softball, and flag football; although, she favors basketball over all other sports. Mallory has dreams of becoming a WNBA player one day in the future. After a family trip to Yellowstone, Mallory suddenly discovered that her favorite animal would be the buffalo. Mallory loves the sweet treat of gummy Skittles. Congratulations Mallory on becoming the student of the week.

The elementary students enjoyed their field trip to Beaver Creek Reserve. They got to learn about shelter building, which is a necessity in the wilderness and then got a chance to build their own! Next, they learned about tinder, kindling, and different log positions for fire making. After lunch, the they got a chance to shoot archery in the snow. It was quite an adventure! Lastly, they got a chance to see a live owl that lives at the center!

Silas Myren has been selected as the student of the week. Silas is a busy 8th-grader at school and at home. He enjoys the small class size at school because he gets to know his peers. At home, he farms on his parents' farm. His parents are Todd and Abby, and he has four siblings: Emma, Spencer, Elle, and Esther. Along with farming, Silas is a part of the local 4H and Alma's FFA. After high school, he plans to take over the family farm.

In Mrs, Gray-Hurlburts 11th and 12th grade Science class today, Nurse Katie came in with the pig lungs! We bought these lungs this fall through grant funding, and they are a great hands-on tool to learn about lung health. One set is "healthy" and the other is "unhealthy". We watched a video, reviewed the respiratory cycle, and then took turns inflating the lungs and examining them! It was also a good reminder about taking care of our lungs and never vaping or using tobacco!

ALMA HIGH SCHOOL WILL HOST THE DISTRICT 121 SOLO AND ENSEMBLE FESTIVAL ON SATURDAY, APRIL 6. WAUNAKEE, Wis. (March 20, 2024) – Students from area schools will participate in a Wisconsin School Music Association (WSMA) sanctioned District Solo & Ensemble Music Festival hosted at Alma High School on Saturday, April 6, 2024. During the festival, which is free and open to the public, students will perform vocal and instrumental solos, duets, trios and small ensembles before an adjudicator. The festival will run from 8 am to 2:30 pm. WSMA music festivals annually attract thousands of students from middle, junior high and high schools throughout Wisconsin. The festival will draw students from a number of area schools, including Alma High School, Alma Junior High School, Cochrane-Fountain City High School, Gilmanton High School, and Pepin High School. Joan Draxler-Ruff, music director from Alma High School, will be serving as the festival manager. “WSMA is proud to support music educators as we work together to provide quality music education experiences for students. Our long-standing festival programs encourage well-rounded musicians who develop deeper understanding through performance preparation that culminates in comprehensive feedback from a qualified adjudicator. Opportunities for reflection and consideration of new ideas is invaluable for musical growth,” said WSMA Executive Director Laurie Fellenz. WSMA music festivals support school music programs as part of a comprehensive education by encouraging the study of quality music literature; motivating students to prepare and perform to the best of their abilities; improving students’ understanding of music literature and concepts (performance through understanding) and providing a performance assessment to improve individual and group achievement. For more information on WSMA, go to www.wsmamusic.org.
