ALMA HIGH SCHOOL WILL HOST THE DISTRICT 121 SOLO AND ENSEMBLE FESTIVAL ON SATURDAY, APRIL 6. WAUNAKEE, Wis. (March 20, 2024) – Students from area schools will participate in a Wisconsin School Music Association (WSMA) sanctioned District Solo & Ensemble Music Festival hosted at Alma High School on Saturday, April 6, 2024. During the festival, which is free and open to the public, students will perform vocal and instrumental solos, duets, trios and small ensembles before an adjudicator. The festival will run from 8 am to 2:30 pm. WSMA music festivals annually attract thousands of students from middle, junior high and high schools throughout Wisconsin. The festival will draw students from a number of area schools, including Alma High School, Alma Junior High School, Cochrane-Fountain City High School, Gilmanton High School, and Pepin High School. Joan Draxler-Ruff, music director from Alma High School, will be serving as the festival manager. “WSMA is proud to support music educators as we work together to provide quality music education experiences for students. Our long-standing festival programs encourage well-rounded musicians who develop deeper understanding through performance preparation that culminates in comprehensive feedback from a qualified adjudicator. Opportunities for reflection and consideration of new ideas is invaluable for musical growth,” said WSMA Executive Director Laurie Fellenz. WSMA music festivals support school music programs as part of a comprehensive education by encouraging the study of quality music literature; motivating students to prepare and perform to the best of their abilities; improving students’ understanding of music literature and concepts (performance through understanding) and providing a performance assessment to improve individual and group achievement. For more information on WSMA, go to www.wsmamusic.org.

Gavin Weaver has been elected student of the week this week. Gavin is in the tenth grade and is in many sports including basketball, baseball, and bowling. Gavin is son of Wes and Terra Weaver and brother of Riley Weaver. He loves Alma High school, but one thing he would change at the school would be to get a new baseball field. His favorite teacher is Mr. Killian because he makes him laugh all the time. If he had a choice though he would have Ryan Reynolds as a Phy Ed teacher. After high school, Gavin wants to be a diesel mechanic. Congratulations Gavin!

Bo Schams is our student of the week. Bo works on his family farm with his parents, Ben and Holly and siblings Brody and Brynn. When Bo isn’t working on the farm, he is playing baseball. Bo’s favorite movie, coincidentally, is a baseball movie called Moneyball. At school, he looks forward to Ms. Jumbeck’s class, since it is his favorite class. He also enjoys the small school that he gets to experience here at Alma. When he graduates, he plans to take over the family farm and keep it going. We look forward to Bo exceeding expectations in his remaining years of high school. Congrats Bo!

Evan Olson, Demetrius Bergmann, and Madox Stewart have been selected to play in the WFCA All-Star Football Game this July 20 in Oshkosh. They will be part of the North Small Team that is made up of Divisions 4-7. Each year, the very best high school football players and coaches are nominated to be a part of the WFCA All-Star Charity Football Games benefiting Children's Wisconsin. Of the 400 players nominated, 220 are chosen for the honor of playing in these prestigious games. The players and coaches chosen for this event participate in a week-long camp, which culminates in the annual North vs. South games. But their determination doesn’t just live on the field, each participant fundraises for Children’s Wisconsin – driving a goal to raise $750. These all-star players and coaches have left a legacy that will live for generations. Together, they have raised more than $5.3 million for Children’s Wisconsin. Make a donation today to support your favorite player, coach, or team, and help Children’s achieve our vision of making Wisconsin’s kids the healthiest in the nation.
