Buffalo County 5th & 6th Grade Prevention Day
On January 28 all fifth and sixth graders in Buffalo County participated in the annual Buffalo County Partnership Council 5th and 6th Grade Prevention Day. Fifth and sixth graders from all four school districts of Cochrane-Fountain City, Alma, Mondovi and Gilmanton engaged in the virtual event from their classrooms. The program was hosted by the Buffalo County Partnership Council (BCPC), a group of teachers, students, county agencies, and community organizations with the mission to “provide collaborative prevention programming to educate youth and their families to make healthy choices and positively influence people and policies.”
The day of prevention included two key presenters focused on preparing young people to start their middle school experience on the right foot. Energizer Carl Olson utilized a mix of motivation and magic to encourage young people to think critically about thinking outside of the box, decision-making, character, showing gratitude to others and strategies for success in their next years before graduation. In his closing, he reminded students, “Good, Better, Best; Never Let it Rest!” His presentation engaged students with his inspiring anecdotes and magic tricks.
Fifth and Sixth Grade Day also featured a presentation from Buffalo County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Nic Scholl and his drug enforcement dog, Owen. Deputy Scholl used body cam video to show students how Owen sniffs out illegal substances including meth, marijuana, heroin and cocaine. Deputy Scholl shared with students Owen’s purpose and spoke with students about how he assists in solving drug-related crimes in Buffalo County. Fifth and sixth graders had many questions of Deputy Scholl and were eager to learn more about how Owen stays healthy and stays up to date on his training.
Thanks Mrs. Rieck, Mrs. Lisowski and all others who made this experience possible!

Mrs. Glander's sixth grade students studied about papyrus, a type of paper made by the Egyptians. The students made their own recycled paper from torn paper. After making paper, they compared this process with that used to make papyrus.

The first grade class is studying how life was different long ago this week during Language Arts and Social Studies. Mrs. Steinke brought in 12 items used long ago and the first graders had fun trying to figure out what they were! Some were easy, like the camera and ice cream maker. Others were more difficult...the cotton candy maker was really a bedpan! Ewwwww! And the toaster? It’s not a lantern? How does that work? We had a lot of fun and even saw an old toy horse that was 60 years old! It belonged to Mrs. Steinke when she was a little girl!

Ms. Ruff's kindergartners learned about 'growth mindset' and the 'power of yet.' They read the story “Giraffes Can’t Dance” and then talked about what they can’t do yet but, when practiced, what they will be able to do.
